Legend of the 5 Rings Smoking Waters

Session 13 1/18/17
Akodo's Fate

We start with the benevolent DBrain laying out how, upon losing his bet the Kappa immediately jumps towards Akodo Tokaji with the clear intent of feasting upon his flesh.

A brief discussion of whether Akodo breaks his word commenced, and was decided to still be able to go either way.

Akodo gets bitten by O Kappa O. He was willing to give his blood, but seemed unwilling to be eaten. Hotaru leaps to the lions defence, bowling the Kappa over but not damaging it despite a mighty wack. Then with glowing eyes Isawa san reads a spell from a scroll and the Kappa disappeared. isawa the reminded Akodo his debt was still present. Isawa throws the treasure of interest to the emporer back into the lake. Hotaru indicates she is unhappy with this whole situation, although she does not have any specific logical basis to stand on.

On the way back, Akodo discovers tracks of a samurai that went to visit the Kappa, and Hotaru remembers that she had found the corpse of a samurai at O Kappa’s lake. Everyone is surprised that she would forget such a thing but she does that. So they go back and find the starting of the Unicorn obsidian dig site.

Isawa starts talking to the monk about what the Kappa had told him (last session). Akodo rounded up some eta. Hotaru and Isawa told our spirit expert about the experience he was non plussed. He said we should stay away from water and could expect his allies to attack. We may be able to get a hold over him and relinquish all debts. He indicated that Hotaru and Isawa were both culpable in bet welching. (In O Kappas mind)

Hotaru, Akodo, and Shiba go back to the lake and retrieve the body. It had a shattered scimitar and a scroll tube. Hotaru touched stuff. Akodo looked at the scroll but it was in cipher. Hotaru protested. The body was safely brought back. Hotaru was eager to tell on Akodo even though he wasn’t being sneaky. The body was burned because we couldn’t get him to a unicorn in time. Prayers were said and a eulogy was said for the body. The body was big. Moto Chagati was the corpse based on Iuchi sans take on the chop. Hotaru protests again. The scroll is passed to Iuchi to translate. He promised on his honor to tell us if it concerned the village. Isawa thought that was a good idea. Shiba and Akodo tracked Chagati’s horse all the way to the west to plains that were pretty far away. Akodo thought to bring rope. The horse was found with Daikyu. Horse was secured successfully.

Isawa starts planning the expedition on the second day. Isawa doesn’t want us to dig up obsidian. Hotaru tries to get firework trade secrets from the fireworks people. There is a planning session for the spirit expedition. A baby is born! Iuchi goes and gives the peasant parents a gift of saki and unease. He is inspired.

We are all awakened at night. There are peasants looking around. They are wailing and the baby was taken. The mom is died. Some thing took the baby. Everyone went to look.
No baby corpse. It appears to clearly be an Okami. Iuchi thinks the baby was not killed. The door was not damaged, and may have been opened from the inside. Isawa asks Iuchi to talk to the husband. Onso, the husband, saw smoke come through the door, it turned into a wolf, Chie attacked it and got killed for his troubles and it left with the baby.

The tracks were followed into the forest. They indicate that the okami is probably heavily tainted. Apparently Hotaru had some Jade but managed to find it. Akodo is currently having his armor and stuff carried by the Badger brothers. Isawa cautions us about the danger. Hotaru thinks about breaking up the jade into various parts. We are currently deciding who will go after the baby. Shiba archer has made a strong case that some defenders remain.

Session 12 1/11/2017

We make our way through the Isawa Mori as the moon starts rising over the treeline. The tunnel starts to glow and and a troop of ape warriors strides out. Chimpachi (armor and daisho), and a half dozen warriors (haramaki and clubs).

Shiba Kasai and Iuchi Kazai are near the front of the group. Everyone else is in a loose semicircle behind them. Chimpachi looks very severe and stoic, but the rest of the troop is ooking around.

Iuchi Kazai wades into the breach, saying that he wishes there to be peace. He broaches the idea that the O-Kami are a problem for the O-Saru, and although the Saru think we’re weak, but we’ve killed two of their number anyway. Chimpachi says that we have one month to bring him the head of the chief of the O-Kami tribe. He says that even if he has to fight a war on two fronts.

We leave, and a conversation is had. Akodo Tokaji wants to solve the O-Kami problem and then turn on the O-Saru with our O-Kami allies and wipe them off the map, like the base honorless bastard that he is. Hotaru wants to deal with the O-Kami and the sue for peace with the O-Saru (like we said we were going to do). Moto Boladai translates that as “dig more obsidian”. Ishkendo-san says that he can’t get us to Chikushido.

As we get back, Badger Sister Fang says we’ve been gone for a week and that Shiba Ran is in over her head. We realize we now have 3 weeks left til the next full moon – which is our deadline and as well as the Bon Festival. We hear a boom, and Fang allows that a whole bunch of performers have come back with Teiko. There are fireworks specialists, gymnasts, and dancers now in town. Shiba Ran is looking a little frazzled, and keeping accounts on a lap desk. Taiko has helpfully written them all IOUs.

Shiba Kasai takes over Shiba Ran’s lapdesk, and then after a while Iuchi Kazai takes it over. The fireworkmakers want 20 koku, the dancers want 12 koku, and both want food and lodging if they get snowed in. The monks don’t want koku, but they want food and lodging as long as they’re here.

Iuchi Kazai and Shiba Kasai discuss inviting people from either Nesting Swallow (south, home of Isawa Goemon) or Blue Well (west, living in tents) can come, or our favorite Daimyo candidates.

Lost Traveller Castle is the provincial seat, and it’s a town and a castle. Ideally, Smoking Waters is the wealthiest town in the province. The other towns are Blue Well and Nesting Swallow and they’re just farmland.

Taiko and Isawa Asano talk and Taiko says it’s very strange that the O-Kami have done these things. Perhaps it’s only one pack that has gone mad. Taiko says the O-Saru have a small and very discrete territory. Taiko says O-Kappa-O would know how to get to Chikushido.

The Unicorn have come by, with peasants in tents, headed to Blue Well. They also had letters (and Taiko, and performers). There are two miners that showed up at Moto Bolodai’s behest. Iuchi Kazai directs them to dig in the

Shiba Kasai, Akodo Tokaji, Isawa Asano, and Hotaru head into the Isawa Mori to talk to O-Kappa-O. Isawa Asano offers to wrestle O-Kappa-O, for 5 questions if he wins, and 2 questions if he loses. Sadly, Isawa Asano realized that he didn’t ask for them “entirely honestly and without attempts to misdirect”.

During the fireworks, Hotaru finds a body of a mauled Unicorn with a broken saber. He was face down in the mud.

Akodo Tokaji makes a bet (DUMB!) with O-Kappa-O. If Akodo-san can guess which of three treasures is most valuable, Akodo-san can keep it. There is a smooth round stone about the size of a cobblestone with one flattish side, an ornate jade scroll case, quite large, with golden dragons, and a sword hilt with no blade.

The sword hilt Not a broken blade, but one with no blade, it smells very faintly of old blood, smoke, and sweat. It looks to be very simply and crudely made. Plain oak handle with cord wrapped around it, sweat stained. No tsuba. The blade is gone-gone. No chunks left. Could have shattered and all fallen out, could have been removed. The sword hilt did not look wet when examined.

Scroll case has no smell. Incredibly elaborate workmanship. Ruby, onyx, diamond, emerald, and opal? eyes in the little golden dragons. Individual scales are etched into the dragons (size of the head of the pin). Jade is very thin, somewhat translucent, and there is a thick scroll inside. The endcaps are not endcaps – its one solid piece of jade.

The rock smells like clean lake mud. It is a smooth, nondescript river rock. Very slightly flat on top. There are no rivers nearby that would make this kind of rock. Yellow-brown bread colored rock.

Isawa Asano asks how to get to Chikushido to the O-Kami territory. East one day in the Isawa Mori is a stone hill that curves up to the sky. It is a favored place for the O-Kami to sing to the moon. At the base of the hill is a cave that goes to the O-Kami’s lands in Chikushido.

Akodo Tokaji chooses the rock, which turns into water. Akodo Tokaji slices his wrist, spraying his blood all over O-Kappa-O and then O-Kappa-O leaps on Akodo Tokaji with intent to murder.

Session 11 01/04

The Saru Tribe want a duel, the murderers, or a battle. Much brainstorming is had. The BEST idea we have is to marry Shiba Kasai off to the monkeys as a hostage. Isawa Asano also volunteers but the idea of going back to Kyuden Asako without the ishkendo seems like suicide.

Mother Izoku is sternly disapproving, but offers no concrete advice other than to try to reach a peaceful solution. Taiko’s apprentice suggests (through sign language) that we go into the forest to enlist the help of a kappa against the apes. She implies that Teiko was getting information from the kappa. And the kappa like to wrestle so that’s why Teiko was so beat up. Supposedly if you can spill the water from the bowl on the kappa’s head, they are powerless.

O-Kappa-O is about 4’ wide or 4’ tall, with a turtle shell and a tree trunk arms and spindly legs with flippers. Iuchi Kazai offers up 7 days of Hotaru’s blood as a prize for either a wrestling tournament or a game of riddles.

O-Kappa-O vs Iuchi Kazai in a game of riddles, three riddles each.
Mighter than the moon, more caring than sun, more malice than Fu-Leng, the poor have too much of it, the rich don’t have it. If you eat it, you’ll die. What am I? Iuchi Kazai answers “nothing”.

While the unicorn is thinking, Moto Bolodai tries to wrestle him. It’s close, and O-Kappa-O drags him into the water. While Moto Bolodai tries valiantly, O-Kappa-O wins.

Iuchi Kazai asks O-Kappa-O a riddle he doesn’t know.

In the garden of the celestial court there is a pear tree that is renowned because of the wisdom in it’s fruit. A strong wind shook heaven, and then there were neither pears on the tree or on the ground. Before the wind blew, how many pears were on the tree? Two. (Pear/Pair)

A poor peasant farmer has two fields. One for rice and one for barley. Has only one bag so he fills it half with rice, ties it off, and the other half with barley and ties it off. A merchant wants the rice only. The peasant won’t cut his sack, and the merchant doesn’t want to trade sacks. Pour the barley into the merchant’s sack and tie it off and turn it inside out.

Eventually Iuchi Kazai wins the riddle contest.

Hotaru fights O-Kappa-O, after a long fight, she taps out.

Akodo Tokaji proceeds to make some particularly callous and patronizing comments and stomps off before she punches him in his smug fat face.

Iuchi Kazai asks about the weaknesses of the Saru tribe. They are vulnerable to the three sacred materials. Some also like shiny things.

Iuchi Kazai asks what the Saru tribe wants. Says the Okami tribe are raiding and killing their children. They want to secure their borders against the Okami.

Iuchi Kazai asks O-Kappa-O about the weather and the best time to harvest and plant. He says the snows will be late, but they will be hard when they hit. We have a month after the Bon festival til the snows hit. He’ll come back in the spring to update the forecast. He gives pretty specific dates.

People disperse to get some sleep. Iuchi Kazai tells people about O-Kappa-O’s predictions for weather and the peasants scamper happily off to plant another crop of buckwheat. That means the carpenters can’t be building granaries, but we can (temporarily) put the grain in some of the houses for a while while we’re building granaries.

Okami are the wolf tribe, and have a strong connection to Lady Sun. They are gentle protectors of the forest, particularly of children. This is seems extremely unlike the Okami as described to us by O-Kappa-O. Taiko’s apprentice seems to agree with O-Kappa-O’s description of the Okami, and says that the Okami have gone weird. She suggest that we join forces with the Saru Tribe to fight the Okami.

And we’ll try that next week!

Session 10 12/14

The harvest is coming in and the people seem to be happy.

Teiko joins Hotaru, Moto Boladai, Akodo Tokaji, and Isawa Asano up to the Ontzen and they all venerate the fortune of vision. Teiko finds another shrine to a local place spirit. A servant spirit – child of Yama no Yume. He cleans the shrine. Says that it will help us get up the mountain. The climb is easy, and Hotaru and Teiko talk about the difference between pants and frippery. Hotaru takes careful notes.

Find the shrine with the flat glossy black floor, papers and amulets hung up and nearly rotted away. Theres a dim red glow way below the glassy floor. Script on the wall is in a language we don’t understand. Possibly pre-empire writing, potentially from the pre-kami Isawa. Looks magically carved. All the charms are to soothe a spirit to sleep. Isawa Asano senses a very powerful earth spirit watching us, and a small earth spirit just hanging out. Yume-no-Yama says the little spirit is his child to assist people in maintaining this place. Says to restore the bindings and replenish the wards. The child spirit wants us to repair the trail. Says that there is another spirit here called The Blood of the Moon. Teiko says that this “Blood of the Moon” spirit is bad news.

There are the remains of two tables here. They probably had incense on them. The prayer flags are delicate and if there were a lot of people coming through here they would be disturbed. Teiko speculates that the obsidian in the field is seperate than this. Says that we will need to get more incense. Suggests a big Ban festival to get the old spirits laid to rest and the ancestors of the newcomers to get along. Need more lanterns, probably send them down the boats on the stream. Entertainers, drummers, dragon dancer troupe.

Moto Bolodai and Akodo Tokaji put coins in the shrine to Yama’s Child on the way down. It’s empty even though Teiko had put one in earlier.

Get a unicorn patrol in 2 weeks and look for stuff to take to Kyuden Isawa.

The granary is built, but the elder farmers say they need five more granaries. Could get three harvests. Says that they need one more in the spring, two more in late summer, and two more in the fall. Hotaru agrees that we’ll have to train some of the young boys in carpentry.

Isawa Asano and Kaori get the shrines in the valley all put together. There’s a blending of the old family ancestors and the newcomer ancestors. Teiko disappears with the unicorn. Kaori says that he’s going shopping for shrine stuff.

Moto Boladai sends off for – stuff for the festival (details left to Isawa Asano and Teiko), lanterns, incense, sake, medicinal herbs. (He suggested hookers and blow but we didn’t write that down.)

Hotaru sends off for the advice of tea farmers and wants to get tea seeds/shoots to try growing some here. Also requests cabbages, peppers, raddishes, herbs, onions, garlic. She also sends off for red paint, a variety of other lacquers.

The first day after the first night of the full moon, find weird footprints. Bare feet with weird thumblike toes. Find them on the eastern arm of the valley on the ridgeline. Find four or five sets of these large monkey tracks. Moved along the ridge and stopped to look over the town. They go back to the grove to Chikushido. The seeem to be scouting out the town in a martial way, and are walking all upright – no knuckle dragging.

Iron Shou has made Modo Boladai an EXCELLENT spear (Yari) with the unbreakable quality and an obsidian head. He says he thought he’d ruined it with a big crack, but he didn’t. He says his son (Shou the Third) has a talent for working obsidian.

Isawa Asano and Moto Boladai bring a trunk of costume jewelry and sake to go have a palaver with the ape spirits. The leader is wearing a daisho and light armor. The four others are wearing belly-bands and big clubs. Chimpachi leader of the warband of the Saru (ape) tribe. He is here to discuss our surrender. Says that we have murdered some of their kin and justice has not been met. They want us to give them the murderers and leave the valley. Chimpachi says that we must either fight tomorrow, duel tomorrow, or hand over people who’s blood will stand in for the murderers. Says they want Shosuro Atsushi, and everyone who struck down his cousin. All their armor and weapons (other than Chimpachi’s daisho) was made out of wood.

Session 9 11/30

The folks from Smoking Waters limp back to town, and no monkeys are seen.

On the road, Mirimoto Tomoe is entranced by Kitamahari, and spends the night on top of the tower. We make it to Nesting Swallow. We leave Mirimoto Tomoe there and the peasants have a small celebration. The yurts are going farther west to Blue Well. She pledges to aid us, and vice versa.

The peasants arrive in the afternoon. They seem very pleased about Smoking Waters, despite Iuchi Kazei’s speech. People start picking houses.

Iuchi Kazei – Expensive and high status. House facing the ruins of the castle. Former Hatamoto’s house.
Isawa Asano – Picks a house with a good vibe.
Shiba Ran – Functional. Not built for a family. Space
Akodo Tokaji – Defensible house near the road on the east side. One on the NE side on the drive.
Moto Bolodai – Defensible, on the road near the entry of the village. Captain of the guard’s house.
Hotaru – Find a carpenter’s house on the road to the Isawa Mori.
Smithy is well secluded

Teiko claims a house near the inn.
Peasants cluster close to town. Mother Azoku moves into a peasant house.

Grainary – No granary yet. Store in houses until granary is built. Will take about 5 weeks. Need 4 workers who are modestly competent. TN 25 to design it. Got a TN 30. Use the seasoned wood from the sawmill. Need a DC 15 crafting roll, raises reduce the week by a day. Four peasants will each provide +2 (for +8). Full time work during that time.
Week 1: save 2 days

Isawa Asano – finds shrines in bad shape, and holes where tori arches were. They’re not hard to build, but we don’t have red paint. TN 15 to design a tori arch (take raises to make it prettier). 3-4 days to build. TN 30 water to make lacquer. Have to find ritually important trees and fell them with appropriate rituals. Also will take a day to cleanse the shrine of Tsi Xin Guo, the fortune of steel. Finds trees for the first tori arch in about 3 days. Kaori the ronin shugenja is reconsecrating of the shrines of Inari and makes a big deal of the process. Checks in with Mother Azoku and she’s reasonably pleased. Few injuries.

4 Big Shrines that need Tori Arches
Woodcutters camp – Fortune of Paper
Road – Fortune of Travelers – DONE
Entrance to the Ontsen – Fortune of Vision.
Path up the Mountain – Place Spirit Yume No Yama – DONE

Akodo Tokaji and Shiba Ran hunt the Isawa Mori. They see the Badger Brothers and SIster out in the woods.

Moto Boladai – finds a barren spot in the fields. Peasants say that it’s likely a rock below the surface. He finds some kids playing with shiny black stone and takes it. It’s from the area where the buckwheat won’t grow. Iron Shou recognizes it as one of the three blessed substances, namely obsidian. Blood of the lord moon. Power but sinister effects.

Moto Boladai gets Hotaru because she knows about mining. She suggests going to Isawa Asano. He says he’ll commune with the spirits tomorrow. Kaori says maybe they should leave it be. However, it could be used to help save Otosan Uchi. Plus it’s expensive.

Iron Shou – takes the melted swords and identifies the swords as Shingon family blades. They were fine bladesmiths.

We’re 120 mi away from Kyuden Asako.

Harvest is about for 600 koku. Seed is set aside. 400 of that needs to be set aside for food. That’s all from the fields of buckwheat and soybeans. The peasants have little gardens and say that the area is suspiciously fertile.

90’ long, 40’ wide patch of bare earth. Isawa Asano summons up the spirit. “The one who is fated to follow my fate has come.” It was a drop of Lord Moon’s blood that fell to earth. It was subsumed into the molten core, but was spit back up. Says that Isawa Asano will be one if his vessels, will help him attain his final form, and meet his own doom. “If you are here the time is now.”

The Badger Sister (Fang), introduces Isawa Mattyu to Kaori and Mattyu hires the shy and reticent Ronin Shugenja. She really wants to join the Phoenix, and Isawa Mattyu says that there could be a way for Ronin Shugenja to join the family.

Doji Bakuto recieves a plain woman bushi in Dragon and Phoenix colors. She has tattoos like ivy in winter. Miramoto Tomoe (wife of Isawa Goemon), wants to go on part of the journey to Nesting Swallow. Wants to be friendly. Has tattoos from Osawano-Wo. Isawa Mattyu invites her along, and when Doji Bakuto mentions someone is saying our peasants are going to be eaten, she offers to ask her husband about it. Isawa Mattyu encourages Isawa Asano to get to know Tomoe. Isawa Mattyu puts Moto Bolodai in charge for the journey.

The next morning everyone shows up. Tomoe, Mother Azoko, Iron Shou (and sons), Teiko the Monk (and apprentice), Badger Brothers (and sister), Kaori and 200 peasants. Peasant clicques. Dragons, farmers, charcoal burners.

Unicorn show up with ox-carts and about 11 bushi, Moto Reiko is in charge.

Started with 250 Koku, spent about 75.

Isawa Mattyu knows the mountain in Smoking Waters is called “Yume no Yama”, the mountain that dreams.

In Smoking Waters, Akodo Tokaji, Shiba Kasai, Shiba Ran, and Shosuro Atsushi track the big monkey into the Isawa Mori. The trees shift from cedars to pines. Find a tree split at the bottom like it’s got legs, and the tracks go to the tree and disappear. The tree is 50’ across. THe middel is a tunnel. Very quiet, no breeze, no animal noises. Nothing happens. Maybe need a key or a certiain time.

When we get back, we find three Yobanjin raiders. They say they want peace, and Shiba Kasai agrees. He tells them about the news of the empire. The yobanjin offer an ambassador, but Shiba Kasai says that is a bad idea. The yobanjin invite themselves for lunch. They say that some things in the village burst into flames. Gifts are traded. The yobanjin want to look at the burned out castle. Shiba Kasai works on scarecrows. The yobanjin find twisted lengths of metal in the ashes (swords), as well as human bones, and 2 carved stones. They’re yobanjin spirit appeasement stones that will make plague spirits stay put. Akodo Tokaji does’t want any of these things. The Yobanjin shugenja talks to the fire spirits in the burned out castle. Found that the yobanjin are the ones that burned down the castle. The earth kami say there are 14 of his brothers (swords) incuding one that was very awake. Yobanjin might have burned the building down because people with plague were in it.

The Yobanjin leader tells Shiba Kasai that there are swords, and a magical sword, in the castle. The Yobanjin leave before sunset.

Shiba Kasai, Akodo Tokaji, and Shosuro Atsushi head back to the tree, but see nothing. At moonrise, a great wind blows out of the tree, and a silvery glow rushes out in the form of an massive ape. It has a third eye, and is 10’ tall. He grabs Shosuro Atsushi by the throat.

The Yobanjin fly up on giant birds. Shiba Kasai and Akodo Tokaji try to reason with the beast but it just says “murrrrrrderrrrrr…” He runs back towards the portal. The yobanjin pepper it with crossbow bolts and it bleeds quicksilver glowing blood. Shiba Ran shoots it’s wrist. It’s driven to it’s knees, but doesn’t lose it’s hold, and continues running towards the portal. One of the Yobanjin kills the giant ape. It dissolves like fog, and the little monkeys go crazy and thrash.

When we get back to Smoking Waters, there are no monkeys.

And no shit, there we were…

Six people in peasant clothes, scarves over their faces, and with big backpacks rush up out of the darkness. They gut Fumiyo but Isawa Mattyu’s spell heals her. They take down Isawa Asano, and one of Golden Hand Huei’s men (Sticks). They have an archer that’s also shooting at us from the darkness. We win at great cost. The fallen bandit is stabilized.

Shiba bushi show up, and eta to take care of the bodies. Kitsuki Jakuei shows up with his yojimbo, Mirumoto Yoma-shi. Shiba Nakano (Phoenix commander) shows up.

“I’m glad you’re safe my friend, but the worthier investment has been damaged!”

The archer must have been a ronin samurai – very precise shots. The peasants were ex-ashigaru. The fallen bandit is shot and killed on the way to the castle.

8 shiba guards will be there all day. Iuchi Kazei is summoned. This is now his problem. He sends a message to Golden Hand Huei.

Shiba Hachi, Asoko Fumiyo, Isawa Asano, and Moto Bolodai each earn 2 pips of glory. 6 pips of honor for the fighters.

Meet with Mother Azoku. She has conditions. We have to listen to her advice and don’t break up families. She suggests that the woodcutters are afraid of the Isawa Mori and that there’s a rumor it’s haunted. She says that a Monk of the Thousand Temples, Teiko, in the Lucky 8 Cricket dice house might know more.

Agasha Hotaka tracks the rumor down to Madame Yuki. She says that everyone knows the woods are haunted.

Find the monk in a room full of drunk samurai. Maybe he’s for real, maybe he’s a drunk. Shiba Hatchi almost believes him, and is going to punt it off to Iuchi Kazai.

Agasha Hotaka and Isawa Asano find a dice cheat that was beaten up and his dice cracked. Would take a good eye to find the cheat, and a strong hand to crack the die. Isawa wants to heal the commoner. Shiba Hatchi nopes out. Agasha Hotaka and Isawa Asano save the peasant’s ass using magic and he’s forever grateful.

3% of logging and/or papermaking profit (after taxes and everything else). He will stick to a schedule, in exchange for room and board, booze, and time with his apprentice. Suggest recruiting eta.

When we buy rice, gain 50 koku from Golden Huei. Nesting Swallow and Blue Well have been chosen to be patronized by young samurai. The samurai in charge of Blue Well was rude to Golden Huei. He wants to know where their staging grounds are.

Get the rice and deliver it as needed.

Isawa Goemon, Asako courtier. Glad that Nesting Swallow is away from Isawa Mori. Isawa Mori has bloodthirsty spirits. Married a dragon bushi recently.

Isawa Asano finds out that the Saru (monkey) tribe inhabit the forest near Smoking Waters. Standard agreement of clothes and jewelry (gaudy) in exchange for staying out of the area in sight of a tori arch. They’re very straightforward. Don’t give them alcohol.

Need farmers and eta. Get more carpenters and master farmers. Maybe a mason. Charcoal burners. Prospectors.

Pair of young phoenix visited Shinjo Todaji. Wagons delivered to a certain warehouse in town. In three days, they’re to bring horses. He’s happy to help how ever he can. He will allow the Blue Well Phoenix to travel with them to Smoking Waters, and then take the yurts to Blue Well. Will supply 20 wagons and patrols to Smoking Waters. Must check in with Utaku Chiendo.

Utaku Chiendo will come by about weekly until summer is over, and maybe once a month during the winter. May have to stable horses for a courier service.

Iron Shou wants a mason and charcoal burners. Hotaru wants a half dozen carpenters and 50 koku of tools.

20 woodcutters, 3 carpenters, 3 prospectors, 3 stone masons, 6 charcoal burners, 3 woodcutters

-10 koku spent on bribes

8 whores worth of gaudy kimonos and jewelry for offerings to the monkeys.

In the wake of the poetry contest, Doji Bakuto and Akodo Fuuma, have covered themselves in honor. Shiba Hachi and Asako Fumiyo do some serious sleuthing and find out the rumors of a kamari contest can be traced back to Bayushi Taka. It’s likely false. Therefore the rumor Shiba Hachi heard of a tea ceremony contest at moonrise are likely true…

Agasha Hotaka goes to gather more peasants.

Asako Nisobo, Asawa Toshibi there with a very old man (Asako Kaiten, headmaster emeritus of the Asako courtier school.) Asako Chukage the monk is there. Agasha Hotaka does extremely well.

Akodo Fuuma in the lead. Doji Bakuto, Doji Inoue, Agasha Hotaka are close behind (mainly because Agasha san crushed it).

Kaiu Nasume is injured. Gets bullied by Yasuki Takai. Shiba Hachi chats her up. Sets her up for tea with Shiba Hatchi’s mother (the architecture historian). She doesn’t care for Yasuki Takai. He took this posting to get closer to Shiba Tsukimi. Shiba Hachi tries to convince her to come visit up north to Smoking Waters.

Painting competition. Yasuki Takai is angry that Shiba Hachi is hanging out with Kaiu Nasume. Bayushi Taka paints duelists, but there is a woman in the background sniffing a flower. Kaiu Nasume paints a battle scene, but with a bird’s nest peacefully on the other side. Yasuki Takai drags off Kaiu Nasume by the arm, but Doji Bakuto calls him out on it and the crowd is astonished. Yoritomo Kakeko has a big laugh.

Shiba Hachi gives out 3 bu of free sake, Asako Fumiyo gives out 3 bu of free saki.

Doji Inoue is really rattled when she finds out Shiba Fumiko is judging it since they hate each other. She and her husband nearly draw steel on the smirking Bayushi Taka. Kitsuki Jakuei does very well. Kaiu Nasume breaks a glass.

Akodo Fuuma won, and won the brush of a famous Phoenix warrior and peace delegate.

Meet Asako Bolodai and Iuchi Kazai return. 7-10 days on foot. Tales of buckwheat and soybeans growing wild. Could be 600 koku in the harvest. Hear about the town. Need tools, materials, a carpenter, and so on.

“His deadliest weapon is other people’s gold.” Said of Iuchi Kazai.

200 peasants, 50 koku a month

Iuchi Kazai recruits Hotaru the ronin carpenter, then Iron Shou and his sons. He brags on his ability to craft swords and armor, but says he is competent in all forms of smithy. He’s not only strong, but quick witted.

Asawa Mattyu asks Shiba Takeshi about ronin joining shugenja. He’s not opposed to the idea. Must be vetted. They need ability and bushido. Kaoru the ronin is a candidate.

In Smoking Waters – scarecrows torn down on the night of the full moon. Footprints of a very large ape around Shosuro Atsushi’s house.

Setsuban Festival is coming up
Word around the court is that Asako Nisobu has pulled out all the stops since it is the end of the war, and the beginning of the harvest. Word is there will be a parade and celebration, and handouts for the peasants. There will be a number of celebrations and challenges for the samurai in the castle.

To do – find out if we take the peasants before the setsuban festival, and can give the peasant freebies to our peasants to increase loyalty / morale. We work out the time to be that we do not have time before the recon team comes back to get them going.

The Phoenix kuge have arrived, three noble people who will be provincial daimyos for the vacated seats.

Isawa Matyu goes forth to rank up, spending five hours a day for the next week copying spells.

Fumiyo asks around and finds out that there are four challenges, none of which are bugei. A poetry, dance, painting, and a game of kemari. All of them will be the same day.

Isawa Matyu finds out there is a shugenja competition at the

Shiba Hachi goes to find out what he can about the daimyos. He finds out about the following running for Kougen province:
Isawa Shingen is a grim warrior and general. He has no major victories or defeats to his name during the Clan War. Since returning, he has thrown himself into administrative duties. We also find out that he saved Toturi from an oni attack, but is a cautious general. He is more of an administrator than a fighter. His wife was left behind at Kyuden Isawa, and will be coming in the next few weeks. He has a few grown children.
Isawa Tsuko is a veteran diplomat, recently returned from the imperial court where she served for 22 years. She is very personable and outgoing. Hachi also finds out: she has a lot of friends and is very good at avoiding trouble. She has not been in Phoenix lands in early fifteen years. She is a widow, and was married to a Seppun general who died fifteen years ago (before the clan war). She is very popular, life of the party kind of person when younger, and now is pleased to host parties. She enjoys a good smoke.
Isawa Togama is a renowned artist, known as a poet and calligrapher. A bit of an enigma, and during the war made a reputation as a peacemaker. Blames himself for the clan war going for ten long years. Hachi also finds out: he traveled from court to court. When he comes to court, people remark that he is pale and ill, and is known to disappear for times to work on his art. He focuses on epic poems. We also find out that

Fumiyo spends time with her sensei, Kakita Ikura, in the ways of the duelist.

When Hachi returns, he is invited to an audience with Isawa Tsuko.
He finds that servants are decorating the area, and a lot of servants are unpacking many boxes. As he arrives, there is a dragon samurai leaving and she is smoking and lounging. She immediately asks why he is asking about her marital status. He spills the beans, and she says she is not seeking a husband.

Isawa Asano goes around to the various shrines asking after Mother Grief, then goes to the refugee camp along with Isawa Matyu and Asako Fumiyo. They head to The Plum Blossom tea house. Fumiyo buys a nice tobacco to go, to later share with Isawa Tsuko.

Madame Yuki arrives to speak with us. We pay her a small amount to arrange a meeting with Sister Grief. While we wait, we find out the following:
There are a few clan samurai here
There are three raucous ronin who madame Yuki does not quiet them very much
Ichi is well-respected by the ronin who come by

The raucous ronin come to speak to us, calling themselves the badger brothers (and sister). They are very skilled archers and scouts, and very familiar with Phoenix lands.
A ronin shugenja comes to ask us a question, about ronin being able to join the isawa family after the four other elemental masters are chosen. Kaori is her name.

Hotaru the carpenter ronin comes to speak with us, and would prefer to build housing rather than help rebuild the castle.

Madame Yuki arrives to tell us that Mother Grief is helping to deliver a baby. Isawa Asano wishes to go see if we are needed.

Fumiyo buys a pouch of nice tobacco for a bu, and stays behind at the tea house while Isawa Matyu and Isawa Asano go to the birth. They distract the father to be until the new baby is born. Isawa Asano speaks to her once she emerges from the peasant hut, and makes her an initial offer. Since she has just helped to deliver a child, she asks to speak with him another time. Asano’s plan is for her to meditate on our offer until the real meeting.

As Matyu and Asano are heading back, they realize they are being followed. Isawa Matyu lights himself up with fires of purity, and the badger sister helps them get back to the Plum Blossom. They return before Fumiyo has left, and together we return back to the castle.

Hachi tries to set up a meeting with Shiba Fumiko, and arranges a meeting in the gardens to listen to the nightingale. Fumiko is invited to a special meeting with Asako Nisobu to judge a tea ceremony on the night of the setsuban festival. As they walk, they run into two crane – and there is a battle of words between Doji Inoue and Shiba Fumiko. It seems to be a draw. Doji Inoue seems to be more interested in winning.

Hachi tells Fumiko about Smoking Waters. He also asks her for recommendations about which daimyo to support, but she does not know of which to support yet.

We fast forward a couple days to the setsuban festival, which has its own wiki page. It is a day where it is forbidden to shed blood.

The poetry competition begins at dawn, with the poems being written about the rise of a new dawn of a peaceful empire. It takes place on the eastern wall of the castle. Isawa Matyu, Isawa Asano, and Doji bakuto are joined by Akodo Fuma, Bayushi Taka, Doji Inoue, Kitsuki Jakui, Kaiu Nasue are also there to compete.

In attendance to watch are a lot of people. Isawa Togama is the surprise judge! He looks very thin and has heavy bags under his eyes.

Doji Bakuto insults the lion with his poem.
Bayushi Taka insults the crane with his poem, and it is implied he is going to nail Doji Inoue.
Doji Inoue throws shade and scandal with her poem.

That concludes the poetry competition, and there will be another hour or so before the

General consensus is that:
Doji Bakuto and Akodo Fuuma are in the lead.
Isawa Matyu and Kaiu Nasume embarrassed themselves. They bond over their poor performance. Kitsuki Jakuei came up to start asking Isawa Matyu all kinds of questions after the competition.

Asako Kaiten will judge the dance competition in the courtyard, next week!
